Broken Ceiling Fan Pull Chain

Ceiling fans are a great way to keep your home cool and comfortable during the summer months. When the pull chain breaks, it can be frustrating and can make it difficult to operate the fan. Luckily, replacing a broken pull chain is a relatively easy and inexpensive repair that you can do yourself.

What You'll Need

New ceiling fan pull chain
Screwdriver
Wire cutters
Electrical tape

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the ceiling fan at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

2. Remove the old pull chain by unscrewing the cap at the bottom of the fan. The cap is usually held in place by a small screw.

3. Cut the old pull chain close to the fan. Be careful not to cut the wires inside the pull chain.

4. Strip the insulation off the ends of the wires by about 1/2 inch.

5. Connect the wires from the new pull chain to the wires from the fan. The wires are usually color-coded, so connect the black wire to the black wire, the white wire to the white wire, and the green wire to the green wire.

6. Wrap the wire connections with electrical tape to secure them.

7. Screw the cap back onto the bottom of the fan.

8. Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

9. Test the new pull chain to make sure it works properly.

Tips

If you are not comfortable working with electricity, you can hire an electrician to replace the broken pull chain for you.
If the pull chain is broken close to the fan, you may need to replace the entire fan switch.
